Well...I have been opening up shop! A paper shop that is! This is something that I have thought about for years but never found the right opportunity. I am starting small, mainly just online and through local markets, but if everything goes as planned, an actual physical shop might be in the works! Right now, trying to network, sell a bit at different locations around town and get the word out. I am feeling pretty good about it so far even though I have only been open for 3 weeks! Would appreciate any feedback I can get! If you know about any paper products that would be an asset to my shop, would love to hear about it!

I see after making these blog posts that my paper collages all have a similar pallette. This is mainly because I use what is laying on my desk at the time. I admire artists who have a broad range of color, i find this extremely difficult! Green? How the heck do I use that? Orange? scary.

Also been putting in hours working on my SURPRISE. Might have to reveal sooner rather than later. :)

Yea, I know, looks like I never blog, that I never do any picture making or the like, but the truth is, I've got lots of exciting things going on. I mean something REALLY exciting that requires lots of work. Are you dying here? Well, you should be! I will let you in on the big happening after summer. :)

Anyway, in the meantime, I do sit down for an hour or two here and there and have some creative time, because i really need that. Here is a little paper piece listed in epla. See that these are somewhat popular, so I will stick with this size for awhile.

The sun is starting to make an appearance and my creativity is starting to blossom too. Telling myself that I should really get back in to the creative side of things, see that I am much more happier when creating something. Also gives me a rush when someone actually buys something too!

So happy to go back to paper collage. Many fellow collage artists have said that you will eventually get tired of "conventional" collage and go to making assemblages. This has not happened. Even though my time in the studio is very limited these days, I find that working with paper is what gives me the most satisfaction. I find that the smallest bit of scrap or color combination is all I need to get a piece started.

The piece above started after I deconstructed an unsuccessful canvas work. I like the mixture of paint and stitching together with the small ration tickets (these tickets were used in Norway during WWII. I purchased these from a man who remembered having to use them to buy everything from sugar to clothing. These particular ones were used for shoes).

Wow, has it really been that long? I visit my blog all the time, but mainly to follow links to my favorite blogs. Everytime I look at this page I think, uff, I really should post something, but what? My day is filled with house, kids and work with my art shoved to the side. This blog was mainly started to showcase my work, get to know other artistic peeps and network. Funny how that all comes to a stop when one decides to get a job.

I am painting (a little) and plan on sticking stuff up in my etsy shop and epla shop soon. Will post a link here if there is anyone still around reading. If nothing else, I will blog for me.

Was so pleased to discover these fantastic plastic leaf ties. Come in a variety of colors and can be used everywhere! Such a simple idea always puts a smile on my face. I have ordered some and can't wait for them to arrive. You can get your own here. What color will you choose?

Been a bit slow in the art production part of things. Mainly because I enjoy my day job so much that I am up to working 80% and the other is that, well, I don't know really. I am not going to stress about it though. I will get to things when I get to things. Am thinking about a 2 x 3 meter piece but not sure if there is a space in the house big enough for me to work!

Oh well...back to surfing...

I have been a bit worried the past months. I have backed up my portfolio over the past 8 or so years but after the move, I haven't been able to find the CDs. Finally, one turned up and I have had a great time going back and seeing some of these really old pieces.

I never had a problem selling them, but now, when I look at some of my favorites I have a tiny regret. Of course, I can't hold on to everything and the thought that, "I could always make it again if I really wanted to" is there but we all know that I would never recreate a piece again.

It is also a perfect opportunity to see how much I have developed and grown the past years. When I look at these pieces, the feeling comes back at how insecure I was, a feeling that has gone now with the hundreds of pieces created since this time.

Easter is the time of year I dread being that here in Norway, things are pretty much shut down from Thursday to the Monday after Easter Sunday. That means that the kids are home and that the food shopping has to be done for pretty much 5 days (I am NOT a planner in this way nor do I have a big freezer). It is also considered "family time" where folks spend their time up at their cabins or on the slopes. Not sure what we are doing other than a day or two skiing. I am hoping some major creativity will come my way and I can use some days painting.

Hubby and I have been talking about how to make the most out of everyday. It seems that lately there are so many scary and sad things happening to people in our lives. I am hoping that my "happy pictures" will somehow make a difference.

It has been one of those weeks. Husband gone, busy with work and motherhood. I am trying to find some sort of peace in working on large art projects but sometimes I feel more frustrated than relaxed.

The funny thing while working is that I find it interesting that I can not foresee or plan an outcome. I am a planner by heart; need to know what and when and how at all times to feel that I have control. However, when it comes to my art, I can't plan, I can't sketch out an idea on paper, it puts to many limits on the way my brain works. Strange, that.

It is the weekend (yay!). Bring it on.

And the exhibition moves on...

After the fabulous start in Denmark in September and a visit to Sweden, the ConTEXT artist book exhibition has made its way to the beautiful capital of Iceland. If I had unlimited funds and a whole bunch of extra time on my hands, I just may have made the trip up north but alas, duty calls and this weekend will be spent skiing with the family. So wish I was there. Thought I would send a shout out in case you are lucky enough to be in the area. Seriously, it is a small world and you just never know. Drop by, you won't be disappointed.

I have promised these pictures for so long so here they are. A couple anyway. I have been waiting for the perfect moment to take them thinking that if everything was clean and tidy, then the pictures would give you a good indication at how fantastic my studio was. Well, that day never came and instead of showing you what it WOULD look like tidy, I thought to show you how it usually looks like when I am amidst a project.
(Wow, now that I have uploaded the pictures, I actually think that it looks rather good! For me anyway. It is usually so much worse...)

If you are a mom, you know how extra horrible it is to get sick. Yesterday I was in bed all day and the only thing thought running through my head is all of the things I couldn't get done. Well, today I am almost back to normal so I have been in high gear doing laundry, cleaning and even making cinnamon rolls for the kids for their arrival home from school. Funny how us moms can actually feel GUILTY for getting sick?

Been wondering about this a bit again. Feel quite fortunate to have a supportive network of family and friends when it has to do with my art and many endeavors. Still going back to the idea of a "real job" though, not sure why. I do enjoy my little part time job as well as managing the online store connected with it ( i have learned a lot from designing and maintaining that!) but miss the idea of having something challenging to do, together with real colleagues. I figure it can't hurt to throw out some CVs and see if I get any bites. My biggest fear is taking a job and hating it. Maybe I should just make a big cup of coffee and spend the day in the studio - that may cure it!

This is exactly how I feel these days, like an observer. Must came from age this, being so in tune with what goes on around me and constantly thinking, "is this really what I am supposed to be doing?". I am content, in a good place, but feel that maybe I should somehow take my talents to another level. Do I really want to get a full time job? Do I really want to work with others constantly without having my own freedoms? These are the questions that go around and around several times a day.

As many of you know, I have a part time job in a clothing store which I really enjoy. I have also been working on an internet shop for the store and feel obsessed with its workings. I take this website as a major achievement as when I started, the only thing I was familiar with was Frontpage 97! Anyway, will add a link in my next post so you can take a look. You folks outside of Scandinavia just might start drooling after seeing these fantastic clothes.

Anyway, off to the studio. Funny how things work sometimes - having plenty of time to create, (or to not create) and then all of a sudden things sell, commissions pop up and all this time you had yesterday is now a rush. I think I like it.

I have finally done it! I made the move from my 100 year old
Frontpage site to a new and improved site using freeware.
Still some small things to fix but, overall, quite happy with the
layout and feel. Plan to add more info and a menu tab for other things
but this is enough for now.

Also...
Some smart folks here in Norway have decided to do their own etsy thing.
Decided to create a little store and see how many visitors/sales arise from

I have never seen snow (or snow flakes) like this. It must only come when it is extremely cold. DH and I took a ski trip on new years eve and I was met with the most amazing site, a field of these little mini ice leaves. Took my breath away. I had only wished that there was a way I could of saved a few, tucked them in a little pocket and taken them with me home. Of course, Norwegian husbands response was, "Oh, haven't you seen that before?". yeah, right.

2009 proved to have been a challenging year and I have welcomed 2010 with open arms. I have started the year by packing up stuff and trying to minimize clutter in our home. Feels so liberating to have cleaned off tables and bare countertops. I have also promised to update my website (which I have and am almost ready to make live) and keep up with my blog. Cross your fingers!

We have had the most amazing winter...thought I would share :)

Wow, time has past quickly! I tell myself I will update my blog and then it just sits here for months. This means that I have not been visiting other folks either. Bad, bad. But now, as I sit here, I am going to do my best to update more often as I feel that blogging is a valuable tool not only for us that try to get the word out regarding our work, but also keeps us up to date with other folks within our network.

With this said, I thought I would share a pieces I have put into my etsy shop. I am hoping to have some large pieces to work on in the coming months, which means that I should have some of these wee pieces come up for sale once and awhile (I use my scrap on these).

I am also working on getting my website fixed. Well, not really fixed, I was just tired of using Frontpage for it, so I am using some freeware software for it. Hope to have it up and running before the new year. Now, back to work!

Context Opening

I can't believe that it has already gone a week since the opening of the Context Show in Silkeborg, Denmark. As you can see from the photos below, the show's location is full of light and space and appropriately enough, in a space that used to be part of the neighboring paper mill. I was fortunate to meet several of the participating artists from the Nordic countries; Iceland, Sweden, Finland and Denmark and spent the weekend creating art with them in a collaborative workshop (pictures to follow in next post).

CON-TEXT, 26. September

Next weekend is the opening of the CON-TEXT exhibit in Silkeborg, Denmark. I will be leaving early next week to spend some time in Copenhagen with my dear sis in law before taking the train across the country for the show. Looking so forward to meeting other artists "from the north" (Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark). This show focuses on artists books and promises to hold many different interpretations of the subject.

The piece above, "RE-collections" is a reconstruction of an old photo album. I re-assembled the book, fixed the pages and filled it with collage.

The next piece was one I created after collecting all my memorabilia from my summer vacation.
These pieces were assembled into an accordion style book and mounted in a French cookie tin.

Our main project, a paper suitcase, is drying as we speak. I will share that before I leave. :)

Do you recognize this? A week ago, we returned from a 3 week long vacation in France. This picture was taken at Claude Monet's house in Giverny. Yes! It is a magical place, so well preserved, that you can actually imagine him sitting there painting his beautiful water lilies. This visit was one of the highlights of my trip.

We also managed to get to Paris again. Of course, having the boys along as well as my 17 year old neice, meant that we would have to fight the crowds at the Louvre to get a glimpse of the most famous lady in the world.

We had rented a house near the city of Rouen which meant that we were able to take a lot of day trips, one through the beaches at Normandy. Knowing a bit about WWII from hubby, I found the American War Memorial as well as the Mulberry docks off Omaha beach a bit humbling, knowing how many young men were lost to liberate France. I feel very fortunate to have been there.

Because we had almost two weeks in Southern France, we were able to explore other cultural cities, this time with a trip to Arles, the place Van Gogh painted over 300 of his most famous works. A walking path with plaques circles the city, allowing you to stand where he had most likely placed his easel to paint.

We were staying about 2 hours from Barcelona, which meant that we could stop in Figueres, Spain. This is Salvador Dali's birth and final resting place and also where his Theatre Museum lies in an old theater. Dali himself, created this museum and was said to be his final masterpiece. He must of been satisfied as he is buried in its walls. It is our second time visiting and it never disappoints.

I have some art to share as I get ready for the exhibition in Denmark next month. I promise to post pictures of my work in the nearest future.

My "I will do it tomorrow" has turned in to almost a month! I have been busy working on (and thinking about) the up and coming exhibition and workshop in Denmark in September. I have completed a Jacob's Ladder book, based on a Shel Silverstein poem entitled "Rain". This piece measures 4" x 6" and is done on book board. Read more about CON-TEXT and some fantastic Nordic book artists in our wordpress blog here.

Otherwise, busy with unexpected home improvement projects. We have had some unwelcomed guests in our home (rats!) and have had guys in tearing out ceilings and walls. The good news is that I will be able to create a studio for myself from the ground up and have twice the space I have now. Something to look forward to in the Fall!

Yes, it is once again May 17th and that can only mean one thing, Norway´s Constitution Day (thanks!) and also the biggest day of the year. Being the person that I am, I do tend to do my fair share of complaining. I know, some of you are probably surprised... i like to feel a bit sorry for myself at times, living in a small country, feeling like I am sometimes in the middle of nowhere...but, on days like this, I can honestly say that I am contented here and with each year that passes, I feel like I belong here more and more. Happy Day, Norway!

Actually, these steel plates are all over the city, not sure what they actually stand for. I like to think that out of all 29 letters (yes, 29), that they just randomly picked these two. :)

I feel fortunate to have lived and travelled all over the world and have seen a lot. Some places tend to "stick" more than most, and Copenhagen is one of those places. So full of life, culture and inspiration. Even though I have been here countless times, I never get tired of it and can´t wait until my next visit. Fortunately for me, my wonderful SIL lives here, so taking an hour flight down and staying with her, makes for a lovely weekend. I will be returning again in 6 weeks time, this time for a work do. Can´t wait!

Just to prove that I am still painting...

Spring is here and my time (and paychecks) have been spent in the garden rather than in the studio. I must admit, I am rather surprised that I enjoy my trips to the nursery as well as my time spent planning out the garden as growing up, I remember my Dad dragging me to look at plants and I couldn't imagine anything more boring than that. Now, I can see that I have inherited his interest in gardening and can't wait until my wisteria starts to crawl and my peonies show off their gorgeous pink blooms.

Living in western Norway, the weather is pretty hit and miss, so when we get a stretch of nice weather, we tend to spend as much time out in it as possible. Sharing some photos from Easter as well as from our time out in the nice weather.

Ever have one of those days where everything seems to be flowing? i think that it might help that i had 4 almost uninterrupted hours in the studio today. Decided to start a larger piece and was very happy when i tried some new techniques which actually worked and produced some pretty cool results. i will share these with you when the piece is done. In between drying times, i tend to work on some smaller pieces too, and these as well as a couple more paper collages, are now listed on ebay. Happy 2009! Can't believe that Christmas and new years has already came and went. All went well except for the fact Paul and Jonah ended up with the flu the day after Christmas and spent the next 5 days laid up.

a few memories around Christmas time...

(no reason for the hats other than we were passing time on the ferry :) )

We had a fab time New Years Eve with friends. We were 19 total and had a great time here at home.

The new years festivities headed into the morning as well, as we had 5 boys over for a sleepover. Breakfast for 8 boys was busy but a success.

Yes, we are almost to the 3rd Sunday in advent and I am finally getting time to sit down. Between my wee part time job and Xmas preparations, there isn't a lot of time to blog. I have managed to decorate the house a fair bit including a "julekrans" which I made from twigs and hung from the ceiling (see photos below). I am quite happy with the result I must say, as it is my first ever! I have some favorite ornaments - the kind that look old but aren't and liked the idea of hanging them in one place.

We also have had a yearly Xmas photo session with the boys and as you can see, this took some time...

And if that wasn't enough, we also made gingerbread cookies in the afternoon!

As far as art news, not a lot of production these days. Once I get past the holidays, clean my studio and get used to my little job, I will make time each week to get to it. Multi tasking is hard!

For those of you that follow my life on Facebook, you already know that I decided to get a part time job. This was mainly because I was starving for a life outside of my home. I know, i am spoiled rotten, being able to have the choice whether to work or not. I do currently have my teaching gigs as well as time to make and list art to sell, but I must admit, it was not enough for me. I am very happy where I am now.

It started like this really...

I happened to be running errands downtown when I stumbled across a sign in the window of one of my favorite stores. I came home to discuss it with Paul as well as the boys. What a positive response! No, it wasn't a "yippee, can't wait to get you out of here", but more like a "terrific, sounds fun for you!". I went back wrote down the number and called the owner. The next morning I talked to her for a couple of hours and was given the job and a schedule, starting already the next day! Wow! things are really not known to happen that fast here in Norway! Anyway, I started yesterday, loved it, and look forward to going in tomorrow! It seems to be very flexible as well as a fantastic atmosphere. Of course, the best part, is that I work only when the boys are in school/preschool and occasionally a night til 7pm. The clothes are my favorite so I figure I need to keep painting to pay for art supplies as I plan on using my pay for the clothes! See their latest collection here... http://www.noanoa.com/

tiny leaves - finished!

Remember the tiny leaves? Here is what I came up with about 435 hours later. :) This piece ended up rather large, about 20" x 24". I posted it on my website a couple of days ago and it sold shortly after so apparently my hard work paid off.

In other news and for those of you not on my facebook, it has snowed quite a bit here and added a lot of joy to our family. Always nice to see some pictures of our surroundings, so added a few here.

I had a class a couple of weeks ago where we collaged and waxed these wooden blocks. My husband cut out some larger one for us to work on as well and voila! I have made my own equiped with some small wooden legs. I think that the general consensus on these were that they are fun to work and that it was relatively simple to obtain a satisifying result. I know that I said that I was done working small, but these little guys continue to accumulate. I think I tend to go back to the small pieces because I feel that I can create something quickly or use them in a way that jump starts my creativity. I do have larger pieces on my etsy site but prefer to list the smaller ones on ebay. Not sure why.

Anyway, this is just a quick post as I need to get upstairs and finish painting the floor in my son's bedroom so he can move in this weekend. Will be so nice to have that done for good. Next up, the kitchen fan, then the hallway closet and then finish up the husbands TV room. Will be so nice to have things finished. Look for some before and after shots soon!

I was lucky enough to be included in Sofia Barao's autumn swap which required each person to create a comfort package. Although my swap partner is a secret, I am sharing the goodies I chose for her. After reading her answers to questions, I created a package I hope she will enjoy. A little vintage (a pewter candlestick and a grey teacup), a little new (organic olive hand lotion, a pair of off white gloves) and some favorites of mine (Kusmi tea, scented candles, a book by Paulo Coelho and heart chocolates) which have all been included for her enjoyment. I am crossing my fingers that it all arrives in one piece!

All is quiet on the art front as I have been up to my ears with home remodeling and classes. I hope to start working (and finishing) some larger pieces in the next couple of weeks. Happy Halloween!.

The family has also welcome your arrival with open arms as we trekked up into the mountains to bask in your glory. Even though we lived quite primitively without electricity and running water, we were able to enjoy your beauty under blue skies and cool winds.

Still in love with this yellow car image. I rec'd a call early Thursday from a friend looking for a piece to give as a gift. No, I said, I don't have anything on hand except for a 5ft. piece that I have sort of said that hubby could have. They figured that the larger piece was a bit big and expensive for this event and asked if I could work on something half the size. So, me being that type the never says NO, did it - and got this 2' x 3' piece done in a day! Pretty impressed with myself I must say. I think that I will be using this yellow car a lot in my future!!

I have been working quite a bit on a nearly finished 5 ft. canvas that I have made for the kitchen wall. Hubby wanted something "very collage like" with bright colors. Well, he didn't get the palette he wanted but he did get a piece of his own photography - a picture of a car he took while in India. When I saw this photo, I knew that I had to use it somehow.

I used a lot of tranfers in this piece and although I have yet to perfect the technique, I like where it is going and have a bit of inspiration for some newer, larger pieces.

I have also been having a bit of fun working with some paper projects including paper flowers. I love these! I like the size and the fact that they keep their color and don't ever die. Wonderful as we start heading in to the dark months here in Norway.

And finally, the wonderful Angela Cartwright has awarded me with this fantastic Brillante award, something which I am not quite sure that I deserve, but nonetheless, will take it, thank her and pass it on.

I had so much fun in my first little collage class, that I decided to do more! Yep, there will be lots of fun stuff to share from now until Christmas including my favorite, collaging on wood. I love these little blocks that can be individually collaged and then coated with soft beeswax. I am hoping that they will really be a hit!

After years of contemplating, I finally did it. I decided to dive right into the world of teaching. It all happened on Monday as I was taking a walk/jog around the lake. The time was 9 am and I was thinking to myself how I didn't want to go home and do the same old thing I do everyday; clean house, grocery shop, paint, sit on the computer, etc. I needed a change. So, much to my own dismay, I shut off my inner critic, packed a bag with my new portfolio, some small collaged works, a 3D shadowboxed collage and my house from "In This House" and trucked off to the scrapbook shop. Much to my disappointment, the owner was not there and would not be returning for a couple of days.

Of course, I was somewhat relieved thinking that I could now go home and avoid any uncomfortable feelings of selling myself. However, instead of driving home, I drove to the neighboring town to a shop I had never been into before. I went in with my bag, my heart in my throat and my palms sweating. --Sheesh, that sounds so lame, but I was so nervous that I could barely speak (oh, don't forget that I have to speak Norwegian as well during my sales pitch)! -- Anyhoo, the shop was empty for all but the two owners. I sat down, took out my samples and they were sold! I couldn't believe it! Currently, collage is something somewhat new and exciting here and I am thinking that it is my chance to get the interest going! People seem quite keen to do other things other than just scrapping. To make an even longer story short, I am giving my first basic collage course on Saturday at a scrapbooking fair and then have two more classes scheduled in some weeks.

As you can imagine, I am nervous but also terribly excited! I really hope I can get these scandihoovians hooked on mixed media art!

Now, back to creating some class samples and to taking a deep breath!

Red Bamboo

I mentioned a quick blurb about this is a previous post and thought I could share a picture or two from my new series of paper collaged works. "Red Bamboo" comes from the name of the handmade paper I am using in each piece. I like the way that the pieces can have completely different themes but can always be tied together. My idea with this is to force myself to create daily but also limit myself to what materials to use. Sound strange? I find it somewhat frustrating but very rewarding once something finally comes out of my madness! The above piece has been added to my etsy shoppe.

I have also been trying to post these little pieces on ebay, just to keep my name out there and my ebay account updated. I find that the same people repeatedly check my listings and purchase these little gems and I am thankful for that. I will have more later.

I am sure that the folks that read my blog would love to hear some 6 or so unspectacular quirks of mine, so here it goes...

1. I carry a large purse but have nothing but garbage in it. Literally! My wallet followed by misc. gum wrappers, receipts and flyers.

2. Almost every article of clothing (including my expensive Odd Molly faves) has paint or medium on it. I just bought a new apron from Daniel Smith but am secretly thinking that I might pawn it off on a friend as I will never take the time to get it on.

3. I can't stand a lot of noise in the form of talking, playing or laughter. This is fairly odd being that I have 3 boys under the age of 12. However, music can NEVER be loud enough. go figure.

4. Can't stand snotty noses. Seems obvious but you would be surprised by how many kids/ people you seen with dried snot on their faces. ewwww.
5. I don't watch a lot of TV (only a couple of shows) and rarely can sit through an entire movie whether at home or the theater. I get bored.

6. I LOVE to snuggle and drink red wine. I could do this everyday, all day. Not sure with anyone, but at least my immediate family.

I have spent almost 3 days working on a small portfolio made specifically to hand out to potential clients. My idea was to make these as economical as possible but with a personal touch, therefore, I have decided to handbind them. They are small, just about 4 x 6" but I like the format and feel like it presents my work well. I am going out tomorrow to start delivering. Nervous? Yes! But, I have to be grown up about this! I am ready and have to spend the rest of my day convincing myself of that.

After being away from my tiny studio for the past months, I was ready to finish up pieces I have had laying around. I have now told myself that I will not start a new canvas until all (or most of them, there are a lot!) are finished. I did get a larger piece (above) finished as well as some little guys. I like to do these little 4" canvases as they are quick to do and I am able to utilize my scrap. Plan on listing some things both on ebay and etsy tonight. Follow the links below if yer interested.

Been working hard the past week designing a new logo and gocco cards. Starting with the letter "E" (no, not because it is MY initial but because I liked the design the best.), I will try and list a new letter daily. I also have a series of small original paper collages entitled "Red Bamboo", which will also be listed daily until I run out of paper (or inspiration). These I plan to offer sometime next week.

Worked 9 hours today, who hoo! Think I will let my gocco machine rest tomorrow. :)

Yes, we are home. After 7 weeks in the states, a wedding the first weekend back as well as a couple of weeks of visitors, we have decided to take yet another break. I am slowly trying to get back into the swing of things by updating my site, blog and other places as well as get cracking on some new and exciting pieces. Having had the summer to regroup I am now semi-rejuvinated and inspired, something which I needed! I have decided to lay low for the rest of the week and play catch up, but then it is back to a strict schedule something which I intend to follow!

I can't believe how fast 6 + weeks has gone. It is so nice to be back in the states and I am saddened thinking that it will be about 2 years before we return again. Things change so quickly here and I figure that when we come back again, things will have changed quite dramatically again, especially in the small town where I am from. However, after being gone for so long, I realize all of the things I am thankful for living in a small, European town. I had always thought that things moved in slow motion in Norway but I can see that as I get older, this is something that i actually am starting to appreciate. I also appreciate the fact that my kids can walk to school on their own, that the traffic is very minimal and that our family of 5 can get by with just one car.

We did see The Police (awesome!) and spent the weekend in beautiful Portland, OR. We have also spent time crabbing, shopping and visiting, things which I have now had my fill of.

My blog has been somewhat neglected this summer but I am glad that I took some time away from my everyday life. I have used the summer productively and plan to get home and start the fall with some new art and endeavors.

For the first time in years, we are here in the US ready to celebrate the 4th. I have such fond memories of this time and am excited for my kids to experience some of the thrill of letting off fireworks. Of course, most of the excitement comes around the time that we hit the Indian Reservation, scouting out the best deal and trying to find the biggest, loudest explosive money can buy. I could actually skip this part and sit inside with the little one, but I am assuming that the older ones (including hubby), would be disappointed with just a few pop its and sparklers. Now, after $70, I imagine we will be busy for several hours tonight.

I have had a little down time the past weeks after arriving. Nice to not have to think of my domestic duties, emails or any other business affairs while I am away. If I owe you a mail, I am getting to it, just trying not to spend my days on the computer and focusing mainly on the kids outdoors.

For the first time in years, we have had fabulous May here in Western Norway. Temps up to 90 degrees! We feel so blessed and the thought of leaving this now to go to the states is a bit difficult as last year, I don't think we had a day over 60 as well as a dry day during the month of June. Now, nothing but blue skies. Go figure.

And the boys are estatic being that their teachers went on strike as of May 31st and from where it looks now, they will not be returing again this school year. This means an extra three weeks more of vacation. Not sure how I am feeling about this! Noah still goes to daycare during the day so I still get some down time as the others keep themselves occupied and even help a little extra around the house. Their wives will thank me later...

rock n roll - finally!

That's right! We are ready to let our hair down and get crazy with the other Gen Xers. Hubby, being from rural Norway, has never been to a big headliner like this and is in for a real treat. Secretly, I am going to get a glimpse of Sting again, but am also looking forward to hearing some oldies live as well as see Elvis Costello for the first time. On top of all that, it is our 15 anniversary, so what could be better than spending the weekend in Portland? However - $350 for tickets? Isn't that a bit over the top? When did things get so expensive?

Back to making some little 4" pieces just to keep my creative juices flowing. Still am dividing them between etsy and ebay. Have a look if your in for some wee art or a gift for a friend!

Home Alone and back to my roots

Paul and the two older boys headed off yesterday for a 4 day boys trip. This of course means that Noah and I are home alone with no car but with nice weather. Sooooo, I plan on getting lots of exercise riding my bike to town, taking long walks around the lake with Noah, catching up with housework and getting some much needed lawn work finished.

In art news, I am still trying to list more often on ebay and etsy however it hasn't been easy with commissioned work and other promised pieces. I have just finished 14 pieces for a public building which will be displayed throughout the summer. I had a fantastic time working on these as I went back to paper collage. I had forgotten how I love using old, thin papers and stained ribbon. I have listed almost all of them on my website however though I would share a few with you here. They are approx. 12" x 16" matted and framed.

Only three weeks until we leave for the US. Whoo hoo!

Once again, the 17th of May is here and that means some serious celebrations here in Norway. Folks dress to the nines in their traditional dress or Sunday's best. The school aged children go in the city's parade and then back to their school for games and food. We had a long day with two parades, festivities and finally dinner at friends. 12 hours of celebrations! We're beat! I have some art pieces to share but that will have to wait as I think I would rather share some shots from the day. Gratulere med dagen, Norge!

Finished up this commissioned piece this week as well as delivered the larger pieces. So good to be able to have time for myself again! The frame was something the customer had and she determined the theme and color. This piece is 30cm x 40 cm. Can't wait to see it on her wall!

As promised, I am showing you the large commissioned pieces. Hanging side by side they measure almost 10 feet long. I haven't gone in to see them hanging in their permanent location, but plan on doing that soon and will share the images when I take them. I am now constructing one a tad bigger for our kitchen wall. Love working big!

Our Sunday was a productive one including fresh baked rolls. I seldom bake and was reminded of how nice the house smells with things in the oven. I have also finished a commission (I will show you this later) and many small canvases. Decided that it would be much easier for me to list everything once a week and then have one mailing day instead of having to go to the post office almost everyday. Sunday will be the day to post and Tuesday will be the day it all goes out. I don't know why I didn't figure out to do this sooner. Anyway, here are some of the pieces up for sale this week.

One Day - 4" collage on canvas

Thank you for your kind comments regarding our home renovations. We are quite proud with our accomplishments and although we have a long way to go, we are enjoying the rooms that we have finished and especially enjoying the extra space. I will post more imagery later, but thought I would update with a little piece just finished and listed on ebay.

Sorry to those of you who check this blog for art reasons, but I have promised family updated pictures of our home remodeling for many months and have finally taken the time to take some pictures. Of course, the house only stays tidy for about 90 seconds, but I was able to snap some pictures quickly before the gang came in for round two of snacks (hence the sink full of dishes :)).

This was how it looked on Easter Sunday. We have waited all winter for snow to fall and finally received everything pretty much on the first day of Spring! I love the snow and I love winter but once the days start getting lighter and my tulips start popping up, I am ready for some sun! I am sure most of you assume that it is like this all winter being that I live in Norway but honestly, we have very mild temperatures here and it is seldom that we have snow laying for many days. However, the kids were thrilled and I was happy having them outside.

In other news, still working on these large paintings and am having a blast. Usually I feel fairly pressured when working large as well as for someone else but for some reason, this time, I am enjoying the larger surface and am learning a lot as I go! I have made some progress since this was taken, but at least you get the idea of size.

For those of you that have been wanting to take the leap at painting on larger surfaces, I say go for it! You will feel liberated!

What a fantastic weekend! We drove to Oslo on Friday and spent a fantabulous weekend there doing the tourist thing. I lived in Oslo about 16 years ago when I went to the university there, and although I had visited the parks and museums back then, there is something about going back when you're older. How wonderful that you appreciate things so much more! The above photo is taken at Vigelandsparken. If you ever visit Oslo, this is a must! Time seems to be going so fast these days. Have a large job to work on that will probably take up my March and April and perhaps a bit of May. This job is a challenging one, but one I am looking very forward to tackling. I am back to my art school days, making stretcher bars and stretching canvases. The size of these are large and a bit daunting, but I am up for the challenge! The size? Two pieces, each measuring 90 cm x 150 cm or 3' x 5'! Right now my hands are sore from stretching canvas. Will send some photos as the work progresses.

On top of this, I am finished up some projects for some up and coming publications as well as keeping my shops up to date with some new schtuff. More later when my hands aren't so sore!

The weather here in Stavanger has been so horrible for so long, that I wake up in the morning assuming that I will be spending hours in the studio instead of enjoying a long walk in the sun. Today I printed some gocco cards and stickers as well as worked on a couple of larger collages.

Tomorrow is hubby's birthday so we decided to venture out and take a little drive. Not sure where, but we figure we will drive south until we see a patch of blue sky. keep your fingers crossed.

I have so many unsuccessful works laying around, all a small format, and decide to do some revamping. We'll see what my patrons think about these little guys. I plan to list on both sites every day -we'll see if I can keep it up!

Yep, this is it, Saturday night dinner by a 9 year old. I know what you're thinking, ice cream, chocolate and designer water? Well, the story is we had a late lunch and the water, well, the bottle is filled with tap water and has been used a billion times as it fits perfectly in the door of our refridgerator (European fridges are small, you know).

Been also busy at work on a secret project as well as filling my time with some "normal" collage work. Started making these 3D shadowboxes and seem to be somewhat obsessed. Hard to see the 3D effect in the piece above, but don't really know how to capture a proper picture of it. Anyway, although the image is a bit "sweet" for my taste, the little girl HAD to be in my first attempt. I will be making more, stay tuned!

It is now winter break here in Norway and we are hoping to get up to the slopes for a few days. Believe it or not, we don't get much snow here in southern Norway and have to drive a good hour to see some!

For those of you wondering, the house is coming along, slowly but surely. Noah's room is almost finished and then off to the guest room. This room would of been finished had I not heard noises the other day under the floor. Yes, rats! Soooo, we through some rat poison down there and now need to wait a few weeks for the pest control guys to come and give us the thumbs up that they are gone. Uff da, good thing my mom doesn't read my blog. She is coming in a few weeks and I am not sure she would appreciate having pests gnawing at the floor boards under her feet! Sounds like I am pretty lax about this but really, I have been so freaked/grossed out about the whole thing that I am now just trying to talk about it like it is no big deal. The joys of buying an old house I guess. More later...

Looking at my face in that picture, I can see the years coming, one more line around the eyes and my laugh lines are become more profound. 40 seems to be so close now, but my mother in law reassures me that that is when life truly begins. I hope she is right.

I don't usually post pictures of myself, mainly because there aren't any. I had to make Paul take pictures so I had some memory of the weekend. I told him god forbid something happen to me as the kids would have no idea what I look like as there are few photos of me with them.

Seem a bit disorganized and out of sorts these days. My house is still under construction as we are living amongst dust and sheetrock. I deliver Noah to daycare in the morning with the intention to get home and focus on working on some new pieces. Uff da, this is harder than you think! You know how you feel when you have to get to sleep because you have something going on early the next morning and you lay in bed telling yourself to get to sleep to no avail? Uh huh, that is exactly what is happening as soon as I sit down at my table. nothing.

Oh well, this is my birthday weekend not to mention Mother's Day here in Norway on Sunday. Figure I should milk it for all its worth!

Finally, thanks Dad, appreciate any political humor these days amonst this chaotic election. Here's a laugh as you start your weekend...

The dynamic duo of Angela and Sarah are at it again with issue 2 of Pasticcio! Just received my copy today and I must say, it is fab! High quality photos, interesting topics and an all around quality zine makes this one my favorite. Treat yourself to a copy right here.

Angela has also written a fantastic book, all about altering photographic imagery. This is must for anyone who works with any type of photography. I find that many of the mixed media art books as of late seem to repeat themselves, a lot of the same techniques are talked about and although the styles vary, the overall idea and materials used are the same. Angela introduces materials and techniques I have never seen and products from vendors I haven't yet explored. Thanks Angela! Fabulous work as always! Valentine's is coming up, don't you deserve it?

Yes! I am working! Slowly but surely getting back into the groove of things. Listed some paper goods on etsy and the above piece on ebay. Still not sure which site I prefer, so am trying to make a point of spreading my work between the two.

Hubby finally returned home from a 10 day business trip to India. I have a secret love for Bollywood films and have now been blessed with 6 new movies! whoo hoo!

On another note...

Added some new scrap packs and gocco cards to my etsy site.

Feeling good about my productivity this week. Finished some promised work and managed to squeeze in a few small things to list this week. The days still seem to fly by, but I am slowly getting in to a routine. Now, to organize my thoughts somehow!

Everyone else is doing it, so why shouldn't I? I have sooo much stash, most of which I have no idea when I am going to use it. So, thought I would try and make some little envelopes of goodies for someone looking for inspiration.

I have lived in many countries and have managed to pick up handmade papers in Thailand, Chinese ephemera from Singapore and handwritten letters from all corners of the world. There is, of course, no possible way to use all of this so I am ready to share with others. Have listed this envelope on etsy and will have more if there is enough interest.

"That Smile"

Finding that I am having a hard time concentrating these days. I am sure it has to do with having a half finished house and a husband half way across the world in India that has my mind occupied. I had such big plans while he was away for 10 days but find that I only manage to pick up clothes, tidy up a bit and make dinner. I do, however, deserve a small pat on the back for getting to the gym a couple times!

I have started a few larger pieces, none of which I can figure out what to do to next. The piece above is one of these "filler pieces", something worked on while the other larger works are drying. I have so many small canvases laying around and will try and list these either on etsy or ebay during the week.

I will post the above piece this evening on ebay. More later...

"Storm" - 4" square canvas

I have managed to see past the boxes and unfinished home repairs to spend a few hours in the studio each morning/early afternoon. Now that I have "me" time, I feel like the pressure is on to use these valuable hours for something other than household chores.

I haven't made any new years resolutions however, I have made a crude outline of things I am hoping to accomplish within the next months. Some of those include:

1. List regularly on ebay and etsy

2. Create a series of larger works

3. Work more with my gocco printer

4. Try to stay focused on my goals

Looking at that list, I don't feel that intimidated! Why? Because I think with enough discipline, I can accomplish these tasks and then some!

Yes, I am still here and plan to post more often once I get these boxes unpacked. Things are a bit better since taking these pictures, but there is much to do and the days seem to fly by with only little progress being made in the house. On another note, Noah has started daycare and I am now going to start getting to work. Planning a new series of works as well as some small things for etsy. Stay tuned for that!

Paul has finished sheetrocking the living room and I am trying to get all surfaces painted so he can get the floor laid. My poor kids, eating dinner on a pile of sheetrock, playing amongst sawdust and constantly getting paint on their clothes...it will all be worth it though - one day. The big wall has been painted a calming blue and I am so looking forward to getting my things in there. Ok, so the rest of the house still is a pit and will be tackled next week. here's a before:

Yep, the renovation of the house is under way. Actually, the sink is gone as well as the floor now. Tomorrow, we are on our way to order a new one which, if all goes well, will be in place before Christmas.

We also had a gigantic stone fireplace that had to go. Here is a before and after:

Yes, that husband of mine is something else. Can you believe that he actually enjoys this kind of stuff? In the mean time, I have been painting any visable surface and am already tired after 5 days.

Corey sent me a whole envelope full of fantastic schtuff (including her book, might I add) last week. I decided to spread it all over the floor and create pieces mainly from the bits she sent. What a fantastic way to work! Not only do you have new ephemera to work with, you also start playing around with other techniques, something which you may not have done with "the same old stuff you have laying around that you're used to looking at." Start trading with friends, you will be amazed at the inspiration that comes from it! Anyway, because I am in the process of a move, nothing is saved, and these pieces are listed along with others on ebay.

Isn't this the cutest picture you've ever seen? We have a little cut out in the wall between the kitchen and living room where Noah likes to play. He actually stood still while I ran to fetch my camera. Makes me smile just looking at it. Now that the days have become very dark and cold, we need these simple moments to put a smile on our faces.

I can hear the heavy snow pelt again my window as I write this. We have been having some major storms here in Stavanger and Fall is here with a vengence. We didn't get much snow last year so I am hoping that it falls in buckets this year.

Had a fantastic weekend in Scotland but now it is back to business. Am listing two new pieces on ebay shortly...

I do a lot of internet surfing and am constantly discovering new and exciting things. So, you can imagine my delight when I stumbled upon this fantastic little porcelin workshop in Paris, le petit atelier de Paris, just in time to share with a friend that was off to the city of lights for the weekend. And it was all good! Can you believe that I received a little souvenir from the shop she said was just about the nicest small boutique she has ever been in?

I got mine! My jaw actually dropped when I opened it and saw the artwork. The fantastic duo of Angela and Sarah have done it again! Absolutely gorgeous! Crystal clear imagery, witty journalism, and an easy to follow layout make it a zine that you will actually read. I mean, how many zines do you really read cover to cover? They also featured one of my fav artists, the fab Tiffini X. Did I mention it also had recipes? No kidding!
